CALL IT A DAY
SUSPENSE
BY DANA WEBSTER
Lanie opened her eyes, knew immediately something was wrong. A chilly darkness. Her breaths shallow, tight. Her body dead weight. She sensed the confinement of her surroundings.
Lanie’s heartbeat, thud, thud, thud was deafening. And yet. Was there something else? Yes, a low rumbling of voices accompanied by rhythmic jabs.
Lanie cast her mind back. She’d been skiing. A deafening boom. And then…
Frantically, Lanie wriggled her fingers. Her mittened hands began to dig. She called out I’m here. The hole was getting bigger. With superhuman strength, she continued to dig.
Above, her rescuers called it a day.
